The Tuomas table lamp was designed by Yki Nummi for Stockmann-Orno in Finland during the 1950s. It is constructed from acryl and metal and features a transparant brown outer shade and an opaline acrylic inner shade. The lamp was produced during a period when Finnish manufacturers were exploring new industrial materials. Yki Nummi worked as a lighting designer at Stockmann-Orno from 1950 to 1975. He was involved in developing functional lighting solutions for domestic and public interiors. The Tuomas lamp was created as part of Orno’s effort to combine modern production techniques with practical lighting. The use of acryl allowed for a lightweight structure and an even diffusion of light. The metal components provide structural stability. The lamp operates with a standard electrical bulb and is designed for use on desks or tables. It was distributed primarily in the Finnish domestic market, with some examples exported to other Nordic countries. Production quantities were limited compared to later mass-produced models.
We have a brown and a purple lamp in stock.
Yki Nummi (1925–1984) was a Finnish designer known for his work in lighting design. He studied industrial design at the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki and later pursued further studies in Germany. From 1950 to 1975, he worked as a lighting designer for Stockmann-Orno, one of Finland’s leading lighting manufacturers. Nummi focused on developing practical lighting solutions using new materials such as acrylic. His designs were based on optical principles and aimed to improve light distribution in everyday environments. He also collaborated with other Finnish companies and contributed to public lighting projects.
Condition: The base and stem of the table lamp is showing some signs of age and use which is in line with the age of the table lamp from the 1950s. The acrylic shades are in good vintage condition, some minor damages which are shown on the images.
