Early 'Fiorenza' Lounge Chair in Pierre Frey Fabric by Franco Albini for Arflex, Italy 1950s
- Description
-
The Fiorenza Lounge Chair was designed by Franco Albini in 1956 and produced by Arflex in Italy. Arflexally created in 1939 as a prototype, the chair was reintroduced with updated materials for industrial production after World War II. The design features a high sculptural backrest and curved armrests supported by a visible solid wood frame. A modern translation of a classic wingback chair.
The frame’s angled legs and arm supports taper and widen with precision, demonstrating Albini’s attention to structural clarity and proportion. The seat appears to float within the frame, held by discreet supports that emphasize the separation between the upholstered elements and the wooden base.
This design shows influences of the Scandinavian designs by Finn Juhl, the NV45 chair, which was one of the first chairs that had a 'floating' body where the chair was separated from it's base creating a more open look. However the Albini chair is a much more masculine translation compared to the Scandinavian designs of the time.
This sense of visual lightness contrasts with the solidity of the materials. The Fiorenza is considered an important example of mid-century Italian design, bridging traditional woodworking techniques with modernist ideals. This version has been re-upholstered in a warm dark brown Pierre Frey fabric, maintaining the original dimensions and construction.
Franco Albini was an Italian architect and designer active in the 20th century. He worked in both furniture and architectural design. Albini’s work incorporated traditional Italian craftsmanship and industrial production methods. He collaborated with several Italian manufacturers, including Arflex. Arflex was established in 1947 by engineers from Pirelli, a rubber company. It specialized in producing modern furniture using foam rubber and elastic tape. Albini's designs for Arflex included the Fiorenza Lounge Chair, which became a key product in the company’s early catalog. Arflex collaborated with many other Italian designers during the post-war period. The company’s work was recognized in international design exhibitions and received several awards. Albini taught at the Politecnico di Milano and contributed to design education. His work is part of permanent collections in design museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Arflex continues to produce furniture using the original designs and updated materials.
Condition: The chair has been reupholstered with a high quality Pierre Frey fabric. Images of the chair prior to restoration are available upon request. The frame was restored with respect for it's age. Showing some subtle traces of wear. Complete refinishing of the frame is possible although its current aged patina aligns with the designer’s original intent.
