Extendable Dining Table in Teak by H. Brockmann Petersen for Louis G. Thiersen & Son, Denmark, 1960s

$9,600
Description

This extendable dining table was designed by Carl Heinz Brockmann Petersen and produced by Louis G. Thiersen & Son in Denmark, circa 1960s. Constructed from teak, the table features precise joints connecting the frame and legs, combined with steel components on the base for added structural support.

The table includes two leaves, which can be slid in and out to adjust the length. In its extended configuration, the table can accommodate seating for eight chairs, while in its standard form it maintains a functional footprint suitable for smaller dining arrangements. The design reflects modular principles, allowing flexibility in use for both domestic and professional settings. The table’s construction emphasizes structural clarity, with a combination of wood and steel providing stability. This model demonstrates the integration of traditional joinery with mid-century modern materials and production techniques, produced in Denmark as part of Brockmann Petersen’s collaborations with local furniture manufacturers.

C. H. Brockmann Petersen was a Danish furniture designer active in the mid-20th century. He trained and worked in Denmark, contributing to the development of modern Danish furniture. Petersen focused on functional and structural design, combining traditional woodworking techniques with emerging production methods. He collaborated with manufacturers such as Louis G. Thiersen & Son, producing dining tables, chairs, and other domestic furniture. His work often incorporated modular or extendable features and a combination of materials, including wood and metal, reflecting postwar Danish design principles. Petersen’s designs were distributed nationally and internationally, forming part of Denmark’s modern furniture movement in the 1950s and 1960s.

Condition

The dining table shows signs of age and use consistent with its production period. The two extra leaves have minor scratches and natural patina from regular use. The table has been refinished, preserving the visibility of the teak grain. Overall, it remains structurally sound with age-related wear appropriate for a 1960s piece.
