The intense colour of the resin creates a luminous field around the delicate forms of the butterflies, highlighting the warm yellow tones, intricate markings and translucent structure of their wings. As light passes through the resin, the specimens appear to shift between solid and transparent, creating layers of colour, depth and movement. Each piece carefully incorporates real specimens within resin, allowing their delicate forms, textures and colours to be suspended and preserved in time. His works sit between natural history and contemporary sculpture, transforming fragile specimens into enduring objects. The name Rholtsu combines the names of Lochlan’s grandfathers, Harold and Thomas, reflecting the personal history and connections that underpin his practice.
