Alessandro Guerrerio Philosopher's Cabinet for Studio Alchimia, 1992 - Unique piece, 1 of 1.

Philosopher's Cabinet designed by the founder of Studio Alchimia, Alessandro Guerrerio - Exhibited in Milan in 1992 as part of the "False Furniture" exhibition. This multi-purpose 'Filosofo' cabinet is entirely hand-painted - colorful squares adorn the outside in a pre-internet pixelation while the interior cabinets feature classical Italian Renaissance landscapes. This contrast in styles epitomizes Studio Alchimia's radical design ethos, making this substantial piece a distinctive and important piece of Italian design history.

Founded in 1976, Studio Alchimia was an influential collective of designers and theorists who worked to promote the avant-garde through various media and methods. Embracing new technologies, the founding members played with form and color that deviated from the functional focus of earlier modern designers. Uniting behind the goal to bring the most radical concepts into reality, Studio Alchimia "anti-design" movement was the direct precursor to Ettorre Sottsass's Memphis Group. Their stated mission was "materializing a non-existent thing into being.
