Good Fortune Tuareg Bowl

$860
Description

This bowl originates from the Tuareg tribe in Northern Mali near Timbuktu. Unlike other Tuareg bowls which could have had everyday use, this particular bowl was passed down as an heirloom from three generations of Tuareg people and was used in marriage ceremonies, as demonstrated by its small silver carvings to invoke blessings and good fortune. Unfortunately in recent years, political instability and violence — particularly following the 2012–2013 Arab Spring in northern Mali — have led to the displacement of many Tuareg communities. As a result, traditional Tuareg craft production has significantly declined, and many artisans have been forced to abandon their work and flee to neighboring countries such as Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mauritania. This bowl is not just a beautiful object — it’s a testament to a vanishing tradition. As Tuareg artisans are increasingly dispersed and traditional ways of life disrupted, pieces like this are becoming rare and highly collectible, carrying both cultural and historical significance. This bowl was confirmed by an art dealer based in Mali to originate from the 1940-50s era, making it roughly 75 years old. We share this piece in the spirit of honoring the resilience and creativity of the Tuareg people.
