Grebo Tribe Ivory Coast Mask

$1,450
Description

The oldest mask in our collection. This Grebo mask from Ivory Coast dates back approximately 100 years. The Grebo people, who inhabit the coastal regions of Liberia and western Côte d’Ivoire, are known for their bold, abstract mask forms—often characterized by cylindrical, protruding eyes that create a powerful and otherworldly presence. In Grebo culture, the eyes are deeply symbolic, representing wisdom and heightened awareness; masks with multiple eyes are believed to embody an accumulation of knowledge and insight. The mouth, carved in the form of a crocodile, signifies truth—an animal revered for its clarity, power, and unwavering nature. Rich in both history and meaning, this mask stands as a rare and compelling example of Grebo artistry, carrying with it a legacy of wisdom, truth, and cultural significance.
