Simple yet subtly futuristic, the design of this famous chair was Frank Gehry’s answer to a unique challenge: quickly creating furniture for a meeting of artists and NASA scientists in 1969, with only a tight budget. He bent stacks of cardboard, previously used to make models, into ‘sculptural, ribbon-candy folds’ and found that by alternating the direction of layers of corrugations, the furniture was not only extremely strong and durable, but had a velvety texture on all sides.
As popularity for his cardboard furniture gained momentum, Gehry grew concerned that it would outshine his architecture, so after only a few years of his own production, handed his Wiggle designs over to Vitra.
Part of the Easy Edges series. Made from hardboard and corrugated cardboard, the tone and patina indicating an earlier Vitra edition. Vintage condition with some small dings and marks.
