Organic Shaped Coffee Table with Ceramic tiles and Steel frame by Barrois, France 1960s
- Description
-
This organic-shaped coffee table, designed by Barrois in the 1960s, features a ceramic tile top with a flower pattern and a patinated steel frame. The ceramic tiles are shaped organically, forming a flowing, natural design that contrasts with the structured steel frame. The flower pattern on the tiles adds a decorative element, enhancing the table’s visual appeal. The patinated steel frame supports the top while contributing to the table’s overall aesthetic. The combination of curved ceramic tiles and steel offers both durability and a distinctive visual impact, making it a functional and artistic piece.
Barrois was a designer associated with Vallauris, a town in the South of France renowned for its ceramic production during the 20th century. Vallauris became famous in the 1950s and 1960s for its pottery and ceramic artworks, with many notable artists and designers working in the area, including Picasso, who spent time there. The region was home to a variety of ceramic workshops that produced functional art pieces, including furniture, lamps, and decorative objects.
Barrois, active during the 1960s, contributed to this rich tradition of French ceramics by creating designs that combined modern aesthetics with the traditional craft of ceramic making. His work, which included tables, tiles, and other objects, often featured organic forms and patterns inspired by nature, which were characteristic of mid-century design trends. The use of ceramic tiles in furniture, like the flower-patterned coffee table, was part of the broader movement of incorporating ceramics into modern interior design. Barrois' designs were typically characterized by their artistic quality, functional form, and innovative use of materials.
While specific details about Barrois' personal biography and broader influence are somewhat limited, his work remains significant within the context of Vallauris' 1960s ceramic heritage, showcasing the intersection of craftsmanship and modern design ideals in France during that period. His pieces, such as the ceramic-tiled coffee tables, are sought after for their unique aesthetic and historical importance in the mid-century modern design movement.
Condition: The floral ceramic tiles are in good condition, where only a few tiles are missing some small chips on the side. The frame of the coffee table has a strong patina, which is a nice contrast with the feminine shape and tiles of the coffee table. If preferred we are able to clean the steel frame to your wishes.
