David Horan Paper Floor light Béton Brut, UK, 2022
- Description
-
David Horan (born in Dublin, 1982) is a multidisciplinary designer and manufacturer based in London. With a Master of Arts in Design Products from the Royal College of Art 2013, he cut his cloth with London-designers Faye Toogood and Michael Anastassiades, before opening his own studio in 2021.
This handmade floor light is part of the inaugural furniture and lighting collection by Horan entitled Paper. The collection was designed exclusively with Béton Brut and sees Horan as a modern decoupeur, applying his material to an original series of works. Informed by French craft traditions of decoupage and the Japanese Mingei movement, Horan innovates with layering handmade heritage paper to create a new applied ‘vegan vellum’. The collection is grounded in forms as precise as they are architectonic. Evoking Deco and Classical, the geometries contain harmony in ratio.
This oversized floor light has a base that experiments with de-composition as re-composition, combining layers of handmade heritage paper to produce a soft natural appearance. Subtle creases across the surface produce a beautiful stone-like quality. A top layer of matte lacquer is applied by hand to protect the paper and provide it with a slight sheen. The shade uses a handmade heritage paper that has been rained on during the making process allowing light through it in an incredibly pleasing way.
Available on a made to order basis in polished or matte lacquer finishes.
Each piece is signed and numbered on the underside.

Béton Brut
Béton Brut presents rare, design-led furniture from Europe and Japan. The collection, drawn from over a century of design, coheres around functional art & sculptural forms. Béton Brut comes from the concrete finish used in modernist architecture. It is rational yet organic, just like the collection.
