In 1969, Gaetano Pesce designed Il Piede (UP7), the final piece in his renowned Up Series, which featured seven iconic seating elements. Inspired by the shape of the human foot, this creation—enlarged to six times its natural size—transcends mere functionality to become a true sculptural statement.
The isolation, monumentalization, and alteration of everyday objects were key Pop Art strategies, applied to furniture design as well. Innovations in plastics and foaming techniques made these visionary pieces possible, with C&B pioneering the use of such production methods for large-scale objects.
Il Piede (UP7) is crafted by pouring fluid, reactive raw materials into a mold, where they expand into a solid foam. In an additional finishing step, the piece can be coated with a tinted polyurethane elastomer, giving it a leather-like surface.
