Montalcini & Pagano Desk and Chair Cartiere Giacomo Bosso, Italy, 1929 Set
- Description
-
Guiseppe Pagano (1896-1945) and Gino Levi Montalcini (1902-1974) designed this distinctive desk and chair in 1929 for influential financier Riccardo Gualino’s Palazzo Gualino in Turin. Deemed a pure expression of the rationalist movement, the project received critical acclaim. Domus magazine, then newly founded, devoted an entire issue to its design in 1930.
This set would have been produced in the Cartiere Giacomo Bosso workshop in Turin. Its boxy, rationalist aesthetic is tempered by the intricate natural pattern of then-innovative Buxus paper-covered wood. Both pieces sit on four elegant feet in contrast black. The desk has four functional drawers with original handles.
The desk is in remarkable original condition, with very minor surface scuffs and marks. The chair has one indent at the top of the backrest.

Béton Brut
Béton Brut presents rare, design-led furniture from Europe and Japan. The collection, drawn from over a century of design, coheres around functional art & sculptural forms. Béton Brut comes from the concrete finish used in modernist architecture. It is rational yet organic, just like the collection.
