KOMARUYA SUMII
Since its founding in 1624, Komaruya Sumii has been one of Kyoto's most respected fan workshops, originally dedicated to presenting to the Imperial Court. For nearly four centuries, the Sumii family has upheld the tradition of Kyoto's signature Kyo-sensu (non-folding fans). The bamboo handle and ribs are carved from a single piece of bamboo, resulting in a seamless form, strength, and quiet refinement.
These exceptional pieces are carefully hand-assembled in Kyoto, meticulously shaped and finished by skilled artisans. This limited-edition series features hand-painted fans inspired by Ito Jakuchu, a legendary Edo-period painter renowned for his vivid, imaginative depictions of nature and profound spirituality. Painted by a contemporary Kyoto artist trained in traditional Japanese painting techniques, these fans are one-of-a-kind works of art, combining cultural memory, artistic integrity, and reverent craftsmanship.
