Pierre Chapo dining table mod. T21C, France, 1969

$10,900
Description

Characterized by its signature twist, this solid elm dining table by French furniture designer and craftsman Pierre Chapo remains one of his most recognisable designs. The dynamic construction hinges on four crossed legs, creating a sturdy but elegant silhouette. The effect is amplified by the deep circular table top, which has a subtly chamfered edge.

Though initially drawn to a career as a painter, Chapo (1927-1987) turned to woodworking after a fateful encounter with a shipbuilding carpenter. He studied architecture at what is now the Beaux-Arts de Paris, but the spirit of the workshop endured in his furniture designs, produced largely in solid oak, elm, teak and ash. He is best known for his T21 series, the leaf-like T22 ‘Oeil’ table and the rationalist ‘Godot’ bed, a commission from Samuel Beckett.

In good vintage condition, with a newly restored surface.

Béton Brut

Béton Brut presents rare, design-led furniture from Europe and Japan. The collection, drawn from over a century of design, coheres around functional art & sculptural forms. Béton Brut comes from the concrete finish used in modernist architecture. It is rational yet organic, just like the collection.
