1979 BMW Alpina B6 2.8L

$90,000
Description

This 1979 BMW Alpina B6 2.8L is #62 of 533 produced and is believed to have gone into storage shortly after importation to Oakland, California early in its life. This Alpina purchased in the early 2000s by its previous owner, a San Francisco-area collector who reportedly overhauled its Alpina-built 2.8L inline-six as well as replacing the clutch and second gear synchronizer for its 5-speed manual transmission. It has been maintained as part of the current owner’s collection since is acquisition in Pennsylvania following a 2008 BaT feature, and was recently serviced with an oil change and brake fluid flush. This Alpina E21 is offered by the seller on behalf of its current owner with service documentation beginning in the early 2000s, magazine features, and a clean California title.

The exterior is finished in Iberian Red (Iberischrot) with silver Alpina decals, an Alpina air dam, and a black Zender rubber trunk lid spoiler. The seller notes that paintless dent removal was performed for some small dings, and the decals were partially replaced under previous ownership. A rust spot on the right rear quarter window was also repaired. Small bubbles are noted near the tail lights.

The car retains European-market bumpers as well as yellow high beams and chrome door mirrors. Alpina wheels feature exposed lugs and valve stems and are fitted with Yokohama S.drive tires measuring 205/50-15 front and rear.

The cabin is trimmed in black with Alpina materials on the front buckets, which include a 1978 Alpina/Scheel driver’s seat and a 1979 Alpina-Recaro on the passenger side. An Alpina-branded wood shift knob is fitted, and a blanking plate covers the factory radio recess. A Blaupunkt Frankfurt stereo is included in the sale. A prior owner had the visor signed by Hans Stuck.

The leather-rimmed MOMO steering wheel features blue stitching and an Alpina script on the upper right spoke. Additional touches include VDO auxiliary gauges mounted in the center stack. Approximately 118k kilometers (~73k miles) are shown on the 6-digit odometer.

The 2.8L inline-six is based on the contemporary M30 inline-six, and was reportedly rebuilt at 110k km under previous ownership with OEM Alpina pistons, a balanced rotating assembly, and a cylinder head overhaul. The 5-speed manual transmission received a new second gear synchronizer and clutch at the same time.

The mufflers were replaced with non-Alpina items under prior ownership. An oil change and brake fluid flush were recently performed according to the seller. Additional photos of the underside are provided in the gallery to depict the floors, rockers, and suspension components.

Information on the model is included in the sale along with a listing of Alpina-specific parts, service documentation since the early 2000s, a period road test, and contemporary magazine features.
