Il Hoon Roh
Biography IL Hoon Roh (b. 1978) is a creator who incorporates into his works aspects of design, architecture, engineering, art and traditional craft techniques while often utilizing cutting-edge materials. Roh has a keen interest in designs found in nature and carries out experiments in order to recreate natural processes in his works. He seeks to express the essence of the beauty found in nature in the most appropriate and natural manner while adhering to his philosophy about the importance and necessity of human craftsmanship. This has led him to utilize modern materials such as carbon fiber and aramid, and production techniques such as CNC, high-tech engineering programs and 3D printing, all the while maintaining prominent aspects of craftsman techniques in his works. Roh received his Diploma from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London and his Masters in Design Products from the Royal College of Art. He worked as an architect at Foster+Partners before establishing his own studio in London in 2010, which he moved to Seoul in 2013. In 2017, the Centre Pompidou in Paris acquired his 2013 work Rami Bench for its permanent collection.
