Candleholders may seem obsolete, displaced by more efficient lighting technologies. Yet they remain part of a household ritual. In seeking to elevate this domestic habit and highlight the flame as a symbol of our wonder at fire, this project took shape. Italic is a floor candleholder with a slim structure that, at its peak and almost hidden, holds a tealight. It is delivered disassembled in a dedicated, reusable packaging, and includes five standard tealightsaded rod that adds texture, and a hollow cylinder that cradles the candle. The three parts are made of untreated stainless steel, with the base and hollow cylinder lathe-turned locally. The object transcends function — illumination is not its purpose so much as inviting us to contemplate light. The flame remains clearly visible while the candle seems to disappear. Furthermore, the acts of lighting and blowing out set the rod into a subtle sway, adding another sensory layer. In its balance between weight and movement, between use and observation, the piece turns simple actions into a reflective ritual.
Italic is an open edition piece designed in 2025 and produced in Spain. It is delivered disassembled in a dedicated, reusable packaging, and includes five standard tealights, assembly instructions, and a certificate of authenticity.

Isabel Alonso
Isabel Alonso is a Spanish designer based in London and a PhD candidate at the Royal College of Art, funded by LAHP. She uses design as a medium to explore cultural practices and ecological concerns, often with a collaborative, research-driven, and experimental approach. Her practice spans furniture, objects, and graphic art, yet she remains drawn to work that redefines these boundaries. Isabel’s work is characterised by narrative, material honesty, and attentiveness to composition. She earned her MA in Design Products from the Royal College of Art with a scholarship granted by the “la Caixa” Foundation. Previously, she studied Industrial Design Engineering and completed a Master’s Degree in Graphic Arts, both at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain. Among other distinctions, Isabel has received the Spanish National Award for Academic Excellence and the Young Talents Home Design Award from Neo2 Magazine. She has carried out her professional activity in Spain, Sweden, and the UK. Some venues where her work has been exhibited include EDIT Napoli, Collectible NY, and ARAM — the latter two through a collaboration with Max Radford Gallery.
